Overall experience is poor - if anything goes wrong that require human intervention, you will end up having to deal with plenty of inefficiency, incompetence and poor awareness in customer services. Avoid if you are in the UK. I had a lot of issue due to Brexit. While idealwine claims that they were finally Brexit-ready (after delaying my Jan 2021 purchase by about 3 months), the solution was certainly poorly thought-through and full of issues. i.e. they have a policy where anything below 150EUR are shipped on a UK VAT free basis, while anything above will subject to UK VAT and also a 33GBP admin charge by UPS. Idealwine still fails to explain what does the 150EUR limit include - does it include shipping? Buyers Premium? French VAT on Buyers Premium? none was explained nor did the customer services agents know upon asking them. This information is vital for anyone who wants to avoid the punitive and time consuming process for UK VAT. Also, on a fully inclusive basis, idealwine will be punitively expensive for anyone in the UK - you are paying 30EUR to ship 120EUR worth of wines. There are plenty of good EU based wine merchants who are willing to sell on a fully-duty paid basis. The process in dealing with Idealwine is anything but smooth, feels like that many of its steps have not been effectively managed. Take one simple example here: the VerifiedReview email requesting for this particular review was meant to be a simple click-through process, but all the URLs in the emails had the wrong prefix and unusable. The business model of auction market place for old wines is a great idea, but any good business require more than just good ideas but effective execution to make things work.

Avoid if you are in the UK. Wine ordered and paid for in January 2021 but only been shipped in April 2020 due to Brexit delay. The process was poorly managed and communication was painful. The company took payments despite Brexit, but only to delay shipments due to Brexit without any warning or willing to refund. The right thing to do would have been to stop UK orders if ideal wine didn't know what was going on, or to refund orders they'd mistakenly taken. Throughout the process, what had gone wrong include: 1. Idealwine simply did not have a Brexit strategy, yet was happy to take money for UK orders well into Brexit. Other UK-friendly EU wine merchants have adequate Brexit warning - i.e. Decantalo specifically told customers to be Brexit-aware and are now shipping to UK fully duty-paid. Brexit did not happen overnight, yet as a business idealwine was simply happy to take money first and shift all risks to customers. 2. To Idealwine's credit, they were happy to refund fixed priced orders, but refused to refund any auctioned orders arguing that they had paid the seller. They brand themselves as a merchant rather a marketplace, but when problem arises they'd rather be a marketplace to minimise responsibility. 3. the customer services throughout the process was poor - there was no prompt communication re delays, my order was delayed for several occasions and nearly all of which required me to approach them. The team were generally helpful if you do get hold of them, but most calls have left unanswered and some emails were rather unclear (possibly a language issue). It was also partly due to the team being confused themselves re Brexit. 4. i think the ideal wine business model is simply not going to work for the UK after Brexit. And the company has certainly not tried to make it easier - i.e. there is still no clear answer on their website re Brexit. depending where you look you tend to get different answers. 5. the review process is also unfair - while verified-review is a good idea, it only allows you to leave one after shipment is completed. So for the entire 3 months of my delay - there was no way of leaving a review like this to warn others.

There are a few things we would like to clarify, both for you and any other customers reading this review. 1. iDealwine’s Brexit Strategy – just like everyone else in the fine wine industry, iDealwine prepared intensely for Brexit over the course of many months, both on the logistics and communication side. Some regulations regarding taxes were still unclear in January, and we sought legal advice. In order to avoid miscommunication to our customers that may have incurred additional fees, we waited for legal clarification before shipping our orders. While we are glad that we did due diligence (and avoid potentially flouting new rules) the unfortunate consequence was a backlog of orders that took some time to clear. Currently, all orders are shipping as expected and without problems. 2. Refunds – when possible and fair, iDealwine is happy to process refunds and does so promptly, however it is important to understand that auctions are highly-regulated in France (and elsewhere) which doesn’t always allow the same flexibility as fixed-price sales. Auction participants are made aware that all bids are final and cannot be reversed. 3. Customer service was slow to respond and communication poor – we’re sorry to couldn’t reply in a timely manner. Paris (where our HQ is based) is currently in lockdown and our team are working from home – so response times may be longer. iDealwine is currently recruiting two new people to join our customer services team, so we hope to reduce response times very soon. 4. Regarding your difficulty finding clear rules about ordering from iDealwine post-Brexit – you will find detailed answers about refundable VAT, taxes, and import duties in iDealwine’s FAQ – just filter “my order” and you’ll see our Brexit section. We hope this will be of use in the future. 5. Verified reviews – we respectfully disagree that the review process is unfair. We invite customers to leave reviews based on their full iDealwine experience, which is only complete once their order is received. The site never mentioned that Fed Ex would assess an additional shipping charge on top of what I paid Idealwine. The cost of FedEx was MORE than the bottles of wine. I think this is unacceptable to warn a US buyer before they purchase. How would I know that FedEx would charge an additional $316 USD??

I have bought a bottle of wine, which hasn’t been cheap and the wine was corked. iDealwine doesn’t take any responsibility of this and they only promised me only a voucher of €60 (which is a lot less than the wine’s price). But even this voucher hasn’t been yet sent to me. Definitely not a good experience. They will probably loose me as customer for ever.

Out of Colissimo and Chronopost, I have chosen Colissimo (I usually decide depending on the value of wines). I was extremely positively surprised when I saw the package was shipped by UPS in stead of Colissimo. I thought they finally ditched Colissimo and soon after I've sent another package by choosing Colissimo, but unfortunately it seems this UPS moment was a one time thing. UPS worked perfectly as it has tracking, which Colissimo practically doesn't.

Terrible shipping. The cheapest EU shipping is 58 EUR, for which in 7 other online EU wine shops I get a terrific service (mostly UPS). With Idealwine's Colissimo, every package they sent gets lost for atleast 10 days. Terrible, terrible shipping. The package for this order is still somewhere "last tracking info ewas 10 days ago - the package has left its country of origin".

Be sure we are making our best but there are several delays due to covid rising back in France and other EU countries. We got messages from shipping companies and Croatia is one of them, the distribution centers or trucks and planes are full of packages and less numerous. Idealwine.com has one of the strongest wine selections in the business, both by fixed price and auction. Your selection is truly 5 star However, as I do not speak french (yet): - it is annoying that the website does not stay in english setting, it keeps flipping back to french and even in my logged in english setting many wines have partial french descriptions - Any modern online shop sends out regular updates on shipping status and so does idealwine.com. But, they are all in french even for “english language setting” customers. It makes the shipping updates useless frankly. I buy wine from other online wineshops based in France and they manage to send shipment updates in English so why not Idealwine.com? Keep up the good work on your fantastic selection, if you improve on your customer support for non french customers I will increase my wine investments with you in the future.

Site, selection, service and delivery are all excellent. A few minor improvement points for consideration: I would prefer no Styrofoam in the delivery packaging (the DPD wine cartons, for example, are robust and easier to recycle). Keep working to improve the advanced search functionality on the site. It is one of the best for a wine web site, but it could still be improved.
